The resort of Les Gets stands out thanks to its unique layout: a village right at the heart of the ski area. In the centre, the church and narrow streets of the old village are a reminder of the heritage of Les Gets. Situated on a pass in a “cool hole”, the resort benefits from a microclimate that guarantees snow quality equivalent to that of sites perched at an altitude of 1,500 metres. The gentle terrain – with no steep slopes or rocky bars – ensures fluid, accessible skiing that appeals to families and beginners alike, as well as seasoned skiers looking for technical diversity.

Bike Europe's largest Bikepark Les Gets, the place to bike

With over 128 kilometres of marked trails, the Les Gets bike park is designed to meet the needs of all levels of skier and is one of the largest and most renowned in the world.

Directly linked to Morzine and the vast Portes du Soleil ski area – a Franco-Swiss ski area linking 12 resorts via ski lifts – the bikepark is part of an internationally renowned network.

The resort is a pioneer in Europe in the development of facilities dedicated to mountain biking. Since 1992, Les Gets has hosted the biggest mountain bike competitions: French Cups and Championships, Crankworx in 2016, 2017 and 2018, World Championships in 2004 and 2022, World Cups in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2019, 2021, and since 2023!

A mountain village

Les Gets is a mountain village situated between 940 m at the Pont des Gets and 1,848 m at Mont Chéry. The main town lies at an altitude of 1,172 m, which is a determining factor for the climate, vegetation and way of life. Until the 10th century, the area was sparsely inhabited, with the valley’s inhabitants mainly coming to collect wood. The name “Gets”, attested in the forms gietos, giettorum or giets, means “passages” or “corridors” used to slide down felled trees.

This etymology is also found in other names in the region, such as Giez, Gy, La Giettaz and Gex. Before the rise of tourism and winter sports, the main resources of the inhabitants were pasture, wood and water. Spruce and fir were used to build houses, from the frameworks to the shingles on the roofs, as well as to make kitchen utensils and farming tools.

Wood was also used to make sledges for transporting harvests, while the “coffi”, attached to the harvester’s belt, was used to sharpen the scythe. In spring, the melting snow increased the flow of the torrents and kept the sawmills running day and night.

The birth Winter sports in Les Gets

The first traces of skiing in Les Gets appeared in the 1930s on the slopes of Carry. Every Sunday, people from Geneva skied up to Les Chavannes and then to Ranfoilly before coming back down to the village.

In 1936, the Boule de Gomme ski lift became the first detachable ski lift in Europe. Built from wood, it even used bicycle saddles as seats. A prototype chairlift was tested at Les Chavannes in 1947.

The resort continued to expand with the construction of the Puthays (1946) and Mont-Chéry (1952) ski lifts, followed by the Chavannes (1973) and Mont-Chéry (1981) gondola lifts. In 1988, the Chavannes lift was replaced by a 4-seater chairlift.

The first ski school, “ARIS”, was founded in 1931 by Aristide Debiolles, followed by the ESF in 1940. In the 1970s, Les Gets joined the “Stations-Village Savoie” association and the Franco-Swiss Portes du Soleil ski area.
