This route takes you first into the valley before tackling the big one from Samoëns. The ascent of the Col de Joux Plane on this side of the valley involves almost 12 km of climbing, with an average gradient of 8.5% and whole kilometres at over 10%.
Unlike other cols, Joux Plane offers virtually no resting places. The effort is constant and the narrow, winding road demands total concentration. Once at the top, the view of the lake and the plunging Mont-Blanc massif are the best rewards of all. The descent to Morzine is fast and technical, before the final ascent to Les Gets.
The little “weather” bonus: The south side (Samoëns) is very exposed to the sun. At the height of summer, the heat can become a formidable opponent on the toughest ramps. Set off early and make sure you fill up with water in Samoëns before tackling the first hairpin bends.
Gearing: Don’t underestimate Joux Plane. Even good climbers appreciate a 34×30 or 32 to keep their speed up when the gradient exceeds 10%. Save your energy for the last few kilometres before the summit, which are often the most mentally demanding.
