Ecotourism & the environment Our environmental labels Les Gets, a committed resort

Les Gets has been a UNESCO Chablais Geopark since 2012, thanks to the presence of peat bogs on its territory, which play a very important role in our ecosystem.

Les Gets, at the heart of the Geopark of the Chablais

Les Gets is part of the Chablais region, a UNESCO World Geopark.

The Chablais enjoys an exceptional location, nestling between the southern shores of Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. From the forces of nature to human activities, its identity has been shaped over thousands of years. The geological imprint is a determining factor in this history.

The creation of a Geotrail is one of the key actions in this programme. This is a route linking some twenty remarkable geological sites, the aim of which is to offer a fun walk around a typical geological heritage. Among the defined areas is the resort of Les Gets and its peat bogs, vectors of a very rich geological identity.

UNESCO awards the “UNESCO Global Geopark” label to geological heritage areas of international importance that are committed to sustainable development through conservation, education, promotion and cooperation.

What is the role of a geopark? The missions of a UNESCO Global Geopark

The Chablais Geopark is helping to build the identity and image of the Chablais region through five main actions:

Identifying, protecting and preserving our heritage

The aim is to gain a thorough understanding of the region’s geological heritage so that it can be preserved. Indeed, geological formations are the foundation of all ecosystems and human interaction with all landscapes.

Education, information and awareness-raising

Geoparks aim to raise awareness of the links between geological heritage and all other aspects of heritage: natural, cultural and intangible.

Geotourism

Geoparks are stakeholders in the local and sustainable economic development policy of their area. In this way, they work to promote responsible tourism.

Cooperation

Networking is at the heart of Geoparks’ missions. And this cooperation extends from the local to the international level.

Sustainable development

Each area awarded the UNESCO World Geopark label is committed to a sustainable development approach that benefits the local population.
