A typical day for a beginner skier in Les Gets

Have you never been on skis in your life? Do you dream of discovering the joys of skiing, but aren’t quite sure what to expect? Don’t worry – everyone has to start somewhere, even those who now hurtle down black runs with astonishing ease!

In Les Gets, we invite you to experience your first day on skis, where learning goes hand in hand with fun, discovery and good humour. From those first sensations on skis to the unmissable joys of après-ski, join us for a typical day in the life of a beginner skier in Les Gets.

08.30 – First mission Get kitted out like a proper skier

The day begins in the heart of the village of Les Gets. The crisp mountain air, the snow-capped peaks and the buzz of skiers getting ready immediately set the tone: today, it’s your turn to hit the slopes!

Head to one of the resort’s ski hire shops to collect your kit: skis, boots, poles and helmet.

The first discovery of the day: walking in ski boots is a bit of an adventure in itself! But don’t worry – after a few steps, you’ll be ready to hit the slopes.

Our tip: for your first time, there’s no need to invest in brand-new kit. The resort’s ski hire shops will be able to advise you on equipment suited to your build and your ability level.

09.30 – Off to the slopes First steps, first sensations!

It’s time! Head to the Chavannes area, where there are several areas specially designed for beginner skiers!

The Espace des Mappys, for example, is a free learning area with four gently sloping runs, magic carpets and ski lifts suitable for first-time skiers.

The aim of this first morning is to discover the thrill of skiing at your own pace.

  • Learn how to put your skis on and take them off.
  • Find your balance and get used to gliding.
  • Discover the famous snowplough technique to control your speed.
  • Mastering your first turns and, above all, learning how to stop!

And if a few falls happen as you’re learning, just see them as part of the experience! With guidance from a ski instructor, you’ll often make your first progress faster than you might imagine.

That little moment of joy in the morning? That moment when you realise you’ve just skied your first few metres on your own, and you’re already keen to do it all over again!

12.30 pm – A well-deserved gourmet break!

After a morning full of new experiences, it’s time to rest your legs and recharge your batteries.

And because a skiing holiday wouldn’t be quite complete without a gourmet break, head to one of our mountain-top restaurants or one of the sunny terraces in the village centre.

On the menu? Savoyard specialities, hearty dishes or a light lunch with a view of the mountains. Whatever you choose, one thing is certain: after your first attempts on the slopes, this meal will taste extra special!

It’s also the perfect time to reflect on the morning: first successes, a few close calls and stories of slips and slides are sure to feature in the conversation.

2.00 pm — We’re gaining confidence and you get to try out your first green runs!

After a well-deserved break, it’s time to get back on your skis!

Are you starting to get the hang of your balance, know how to slow down, and are your first turns starting to feel more natural? It might be time to try a proper green run, with your instructor’s approval.

In Les Gets, the ski area allows you to progress step by step, moving from the beginners’ areas to the green runs, then on to the blue runs once your skill level allows.

And here’s some good news: there’s even a ski pass specially designed for beginners!

The ‘P’tite Glisse’ pass gives you access to 12 ski lifts and 13 runs, including 6 green and 6 blue runs, so you can continue to improve without necessarily needing a pass covering the entire ski area.

Of course, everyone progresses at their own pace. If you’d rather stay in the beginners’ area to consolidate what you’ve learnt, that’s fine too. After all, the only aim of the day is to have fun!

4.00 pm — The skis have been put away Let the après-ski fun begin!

My legs are starting to get tired, but I’m still all smiles!

After a few hours on the slopes, it’s time to discover another side to a mountain holiday: après-ski.

And in Les Gets, the fun continues once you’ve taken off your skis!

Stroll through the village’s narrow streets, settle down on a terrace to share a hot chocolate or a drink with friends, sample the local specialities or treat yourself to a moment of relaxation.

The more adventurous can even extend the adventure by trying out another activity on offer in the resort.

Because learning to ski is also about discovering a whole way of life in the mountains. And sometimes, the best memories of a day’s skiing are made precisely once you’ve taken off your boots!

6.00 pm — What if this first day turn into an unforgettable week?

Did you love your first experience on skis? Are you already starting to imagine your next run?

What if, rather than stopping after just that first day, you spent a whole week learning to ski, surrounded by other adults who, like you, are discovering the joys of skiing?

That’s exactly what the 1st Les Gets Ski Festival has to offer!

The 1st Ski Festival A week to learn to ski

From 20 to 27 March 2027, Les Gets will host the second edition of the 1st Ski Festival, an event designed especially for adults who want to learn to ski or snowboard in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Here, you don’t need to have skied before, nor do you need to worry about holding back your friends who are used to the red and black runs: everyone is here to learn, improve and share their first experiences on the snow!

And because a holiday isn’t just about learning to ski, the festival offers a programme that combines winter sports, new discoveries and festive moments.

On the programme for this week:
