4 tips for handing in your bike before the summer

The sun and the fine weather are back and all you want to do is get back on your bike! But before you get back on your favourite toy, you need to do a check-up to make sure you’re back on your bike in complete safety.

Nicolas' advice Intersport shops Les Gets

Nicolas from Intersport gives us 4 tips on how to prepare your bike for the mountain bike season this summer…

Tip no. 1 Check tyre pressures and shock absorbers

Air escapes from tyres and shock absorbers when they are stationary. Be sure to check the pressure of your tyres and shock absorbers according to your ride and the terrain you will be riding on. An air shock absorber requires a high-pressure pump, which is available from professional shops.

Tip no. 2 Check wear brake pads

To carry out this check, remove the wheels, turn the bike over and remove the brake discs to check the thickness of the lining remaining on the pads in the caliper. On the metal part of the pad, there is a kind of resin that wears away as you brake, and you need to see if it needs replacing. It’s also important to look at the feel of the brakes.

Tip no. 3 Inspect the transmission

Normally the transmission does not move during the winter, but the chain may be a little rusty, so it will need to be oiled before the season. Be careful not to get any oil on the brake pads at this stage, as this could damage them. I recommend using an oilcan rather than a spray, as it’s more precise. It’s also advisable to check the lubrication of the bearings, but these are fairly specific operations that require a good deal of technical knowledge.

Tip no. 4 Check voltage rays

This is a check I recommend you make before each ride. If the spokes are too tight, they risk shattering on landing a jump, and if they’re not tight enough, the wheel will warp. To check spoke tension, rotate the wheel and tighten the spokes 2 at a time.
