Route description

Once you’ve taken the gondola up to the summit, the hike starts straight away in the heart of the wide open Alpine spaces.

  1. Climbing to the summit : From the Belvédère station, follow the signs for “Mont Chéry par Grande Ourse”. The ascent initially follows the ski slopes before taking the old botanical trail.
  2. The 360° apotheosis: You reach the summit of Mont Chéry. Take the time to stop around the orientation table to contemplate the immense panorama, dominated by the sparkling silhouette of Mont-Blanc.
  3. The descent via the ridges: Follow the crest towards the Col de Lachat. This aerial, visual section takes you down to the charming hamlet of Mont Caly.
  4. The return on the balcony: To complete the walk, follow the path on the balcony. Almost flat and very comfortable, it takes you gently back to the gondola station.

Return to the village on foot” option (+4.8 km): From the hamlet of Mont Caly, you can choose to walk straight back down to the centre of Les Gets without taking the cable car. The trail then descends via the Fontanettes, Bouchet and Longues Poses areas.

Heritage & Nature

The scenery through which you pass is not only beautiful, it is also steeped in secrets and age-old traditions:

  1. The hamlet and chapel of Mont Caly: Perched at 1,489 metres, this summer hamlet comes alive every summer to the sound of the clarines of the herds. Its little chapel hides an unusual history: built in 1679, it was destroyed the same year following violent disputes between neighbours over the boundaries of the mountain pastures! It was finally rebuilt identically by the villagers in 1986.
  2. The Path of the Planets: The area is home to this unique educational trail. It’s a hike on a human scale, where every metre covered on the path corresponds to a million kilometres in our solar system.

Be careful on the ridges: The path along the edge of the mountain is magnificent, but exposed to the wind and sun. Remember to take a windproof jacket, sun cream and a hat for the children. If you opt to return on foot, be aware that the descent from Les Fontanettes is quite steep: good knees and walking poles will be your best allies.
