This route is designed for trained cyclists who want to add a monument to their list of achievements. Leaving Les Gets, you plunge down towards Morzine to tackle the climb on its most famous side.
The Col de Joux Plane is around 11.5 km of climbing, with an average gradient of between 8.5% and 9%, and sections in excess of 10%. The effort is intense and sustained, but the reward is there: at the summit, at an altitude of 1691 m, you can enjoy one of the finest views of the Mont Blanc massif in the Alps. After passing the lake at the summit, a long, technical descent awaits you towards Samoëns, before a return through the valley and the final ascent to Les Gets.
The little “Relance” bonus: The climb is very exposed to the sun. If you’re setting off in the middle of summer, it’s best to make an early start to take advantage of the cooler conditions. The section between Morzine and the summit offers little respite, so keep your breath under control from the first hairpin bends.
Safety: The descent to Samoëns is magnificent but can be tricky with its tight bends. Stay alert to your trajectories. For the return journey from Taninges, keep your strength up: the last few kilometres back to Les Gets can seem long after such a steep climb!
